Memphis/Germantown 2011 Juried Autumn Exhibition

  The Memphis/Germantown Art League (MGAL) is a nonprofit organization of visual artists and associates supporting the work of its member artists. The League's purpose is to aid its member artists in their professional growth and in the development of their artistic skills by providing juried exhibitions, workshops, demonstrations, and other continuing education opportunities.

  In addition, MGAL works to enrich the community by presenting original fine art in public exhibits and by participating in other community art activities. MGAL has three annual juried and judged local members-only exhibitions. Judges typically are well-known artists and educators such as Dolph Smith, Remy Miller, Jamie McMahan, Paul Edelstein, and Pam Cobb. A National Exhibition and workshop is held every two years open to artists from across the country. Judges who conduct the workshop are nationally-known artists such as Alex Powers, Frank Francese, Wyatt Waters, and Laurin McCracken. Past venues include GPAC, WKNO Gallery Ten Ninety One, Memphis Botanic Garden, St. George's Episcopal Church Gallery, A2H, Collierville Town Hall, and Askew, Nixon, Ferguson among others.

The organization began as the Germantown Art League in 1976. In 1988 the organization's name was changed to Memphis/Germantown Art League in recognition of the wider geographical distribution of its members. Today, the composition of the membership is far broader including surrounding towns in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas. MGAL depends on all its members to serve on the Board of Directors, committees, and to assist in the work of the organization. MGAL is grateful to the local businesses who continue to generously support the organization.

The opening reception for the show is October 7, 2011 from 5 to 8 PM.  This is a free event that is open to the public.

Mariana won first place in a prestigious art competition in Buenos Aries, Argentina. Her art, along with others from her city, will  now go to another compeition against other Argentine cities.

Our New Look

Gallery Fifty Six is looking better all the time.  Over the past year, the exterior of the building has been painted, the interior lighting has been improved, shelves and a work table have been added to the archive room, the restroom has been remodeled, the exterior signage has increased, and pedestals for sculpture have been added.  The gallery also has a LOT of new art by talented artists from the Memphis community.

Current Exhibition - 3rd Nature

Mary Stubbs, Nancy White, and Rollin Kocsis combine their creative energy into an exhibition about nature and the environment:  3rd Nature.  The show runs until Sept. 1, 2011.  Gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday from noon until 4:00 PM, and on Saturdays from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

3rd Nature Exhibition Extended

Gallery Fifty Six will extend the 3rd Nature exhibtion until September 1, 2011.  This show is a combinaton of photography, ceramic sculpture, ceramic vessels, and painted silk wall-hangings.  The work is by Memphis artists Mary Stubbs, Nancy White, and Rollin Kocsis.

The gallery is open Wednesday through  Saturday, from noon until 4 PM

Orpheum Art Auction This Sunday

Looking for something to do this Sunday?  The Orpheum is having their annual Art Auction Sunday the 21st beginning at 2PM with the Silent Auction and the Live to follow at 3PM. Due to the amount of art this year they have expanded it to The Parlor, Lobby and The Pat Halloran Broadway Club. The event is free, please feel free to come down or spread the world to anymore who might be interested.

The Gallery Fifty Six artists who are invovled are:  John Armistead, Art Covington, Emery Franklin, Madison Sherman, Rollin Kocsis, and Jan Hankins.

Sneak Peek

Jan Hankins will present his work in the September exhibition 'Parsimone's Flotsam'.  The subject of his paintings are based on objects that the artist found and picked up over the time along the beaches of Florida, in the Pickwick Forest, from the streets of Memphis, and elsewhere.

Visitors may park in front of the building at 2256 Central, or they may park on the two side streets - New York Street or Philadelphia Street.  Parking is also available across the street at Lee Pruitt Designer, or at Market Central, which is 1/2 block from the gallery. Remember not to leave any valuables in your car.

Argentine Artist Mariana De Marchi

Gallery Fity Six has a wide assortment of monoprints and linocuts by Argentine artist, Mariana De Marchi. We have pieces that are framed and unframed, and they are very reasonably priced.  Currently, Mariana is teaching private lessons as well as creating paintings and prints for upcoming exhibitios.

Emery on the Move

Gallery Fifty Six painter Emery Franlkin puts the finishing touches to a painting he has been working on at his home studio. This past winter, Emery was featured on the television show 'Tennessee Crossroads'.  Currently he is working on a book that will tell the story of his success in art by using a positive mental attitude.  The publication will be available on Amazon.com in the near future, and he currently has over 300 advanced orders. Emery recently brought four new, exciting paintings to the gallery.  Please stop by to see them.

Looking Ahead To July

Bryan Blankenship will present his creative work at the gallery during the month of July.

Bryan Blankenship was born in West Plains, Missouri in 1965. He currently lives and works in Memphis, Tennessee, where he is the 3-D Building Technician for the Department of Art at the University of Memphis. His sculptures, paintings, and pottery have been exhibited both locally and nationally. He has been working as a functional potter for 20 years, and is a member of the Memphis Potters’ Guild.

Some of the most sensual and iconic works of Niles Wallace's career are currently on view in his Gallery Fifty Six exhibition "Sticks and Stones." Dozens of deliberately misshapen stark-white ceramic bowls fill the top shelves of Wallace's 8-foot-tall Collection Cabinet. Fired with a single glaze, Wallace's colors are sometimes as crisp as the white and black halves of a yin-yang symbol, sometimes as nuanced as tea stains against hairline cracks in a porcelain cup, sometimes as sleek as the petal of a rose.

On the bottom shelves, Wallace places one plastic container inside another and warps both bowls with a heat gun. These surprisingly beautiful bowls writhe, reach out, and fold back upon themselves — sometimes tortuously, sometimes with delicate grace. These asymmetrical, shape-shifting works of art speak to every aspect of the creative process — ideas gestating, art and life evolving, and imagination as malleable as molten plastic.

Simple and Complex

Ceramist Niles Wallace has transformed Gallery Fifty Six.  His exhibit is both

simple and complex, as well as beautiful. 

Niles has created a wall of porcelain 'blossoms' in one room, and a wall of delicate transparent 'blossoms' in another .

He has created a mysterious 'China cabinet' composed of lacy plates and biomorphic 'bowls'.  The artist has

used the beautiful wood of the crepe myrtle into four complex sculptures.

Make it a point to see the show and meet the artist on Friday, June 3, 2011 from 5 to 8 PM.
